Karel Danzie, Account Executive.
A hustler with swag, Karel’s customer advocacy takes a unicorn approach, mixing equal parts style, substance and je ne sais quoi. There is the traditional method of doing things, and then there’s the Karel way.
Karel Danzie’s path to becoming an account executive was not your typical yellow brick road. Initially, she wanted to be the director of photography for a major movie studio. To do that, she had to head west, first to San Antonio, Texas and then to Denver, Colorado. Love brought her back to Jacksonville, she worked with News4Jax as a photojournalist then jumped into the government sector as multimedia coordinator with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA). With JTA, Karel produced award-winning videos for their television program. Then relaunched their company newsletter “On The Move” and magazine “Momentum” which won several industry awards. She also managed JTA’s website redesign project with Station Four.
It’s those experiences that provide her with a unique perspective to the benefit of clients here at Station Four. Spend five minutes with Karel and it’s obvious she has an extraordinary mix of talents and is enthusiastic about producing a high quality product. In her spare time, her alter ego, Fancy Danzie designs swimwear and clothing. It’s another one of those life-long dreams soon to be actualized.
Four Quick Questions
How did you get into the role of Account Executive?
Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘Jody of all trades’? Not exactly, but you get the gist. As a photographer and video producer, I was engaged in conversations all the time. Listening, learning, taking it all in. I extract the golden nuggets and create a concise communication piece, whatever that may be. Because of that, when I’m asked to assist with other projects in which I am nowhere near the expert, I can articulate the message so clearly that I become their advocate. And really, that’s what I do, talk, listen and get the job done.
What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
When I was in elementary school, I was the chief safety patrol officer and our morning television news anchor. I always figured one of those positions would ultimately become my career path of choice. Lucky me, I’ve done both! I’m an award-winning photojournalist. I’ve traveled the world and shared the stories of many. What most people don’t know about me, is that for a year and a half, I was Officer Danzie “protect and serve.” That’s right, Batgirl belt and all. For budgetary reasons the city laid-off its most recent hires (80 officers), but for a little while I was 5-0.
What’s your favorite movie?
The best movie of all time has this quote, "He who would learn to fly must first learn to stand and walk. One cannot fly into flying." Did you get it? It’s Coming to America. That quote is deep! For many reasons this is my favourite movie. Maybe it’s because I was born in Jamaica and am now married to a man named Akeem, just kidding. His name isn’t Akeem. Come and meet us in person and I’ll tell you the full story as to why I love this movie so much.
How do you stay on top of the latest trends?
I don’t watch tv, I study it. The shot angels, the storyline, plot, cliffhanger...I could go on and on. I truly study it, then I talk to people about what they are watching and what they like about it. Why do certain shows appeal to them and others don’t? It's all about understanding the storytelling. You can have all the elements you need but it’s all about the presentation. Did your presentation receive the reaction you were shooting for or not or did it meet expectations? Again, what I like to do is to listen to people and create the best path forward, what works for you may not work for the next person but the lessons learned from someone else’s success or failure may be the key to your success.
